This class will cover in depth how to create environment concept art for the games industry. There will be a heavy emphasis on design, design thinking, storytelling, and how to create concept art with gameplay, designers, and art directors in mind.
We will be going over the fundamentals of concept art, such as composition, lighting, value and color as well as how to use Blender to get the most out of our concepts.
The first few weeks will focus mainly on design, sketching, and fundamentals to help jumpstart design thinking. This will involve creating a lot of designs focusing on things such as silhouettes, design sketching, how to pull inspiration from references, and how to push form language to create interesting concepts.
After this, students will be tasked with creating an environment concept art project with the goal of creating unique portfolio images with a focus on design, design thinking, and polished images.
Class every week will have an emphasis on individual feedback and paintovers to help push each student’s work and design thinking. There will be some in-class demonstrations as well as a lot of pre-recorded content going over the concept art workflow as well as 3D Blender techniques and timelapse process recordings.
